William Monck Mason, The History and Antiquities of the Collegiate and Cathedral Church of St. Patrick, near Dublin (Dublin, 1820).
Dimension: 34 cm.
Provenance: Castletown library bookplate and shelf ticket.
Binding: Gold-tooled green morocco, with red, black, blue and terracotta onlays. A sunken almond-shaped panel in the centre, with the title and appropriate motifs. The panel is surrounded by elaborately tooled onlaid borders (one of these borders is in blue on the bottom cover). A panel is formed by four crosiers onlaid in terracotta; an outer panel is painted black. Sprays of gold-tooled shamrocks are used in the corners and on the four sides. The spine is flat and elaborately decorated. Black-painted strap-work, with gold-tooled borders. The title on a red almond-shaped onlay; the author’s name on a red shield. Signed ‘Caldwell’ at the foot of the spine. Red watered silk doublures, with broad gold-tooled turn-ins, using crosiers on the sides and shamrocks in the corners. An exceptionally fine example of the work of Caldwell, a noted Dublin bookbinding firm.
