Marsh's Library 1701 - 2001
A tercentenary exhibition
The exhibition was opened in the Library by Her Excellency Mary McAleese, President of Ireland, on 9th July 2001, and was open to the public until June 2002. The following is the short description of the exhibition that was published at the time.
In 2001 Marsh's Library celebrates three hundred years of the first public library in Ireland with a very special exhibition displaying the most interesting books and manuscripts that the Library contains.
The subjects covered are Bibles, music, medicine, witchcraft, maps, law, religious controversy, political philosophy, science, astronomy, natural history, architecture, mathematics, and travel. There is also a case of manuscripts and early printed books in the Irish language.
It is clear from this exhibition what a wonderful 17th century European library Marsh's is.
