About our Intern

These maps were created during an internship carried out by Gráinne Kelly, as part of her studies for an MPhil in Digital Humanities at Trinity College Dublin. The aim of the internship was to map a selection of advertisements on a contemporary map of Dublin. Digitising this material means that online access could be provided. For the first time ever, scholars and members of the general public can view and study the advertisements without having to physically visit Marsh’s Library. Preserving and conserving the advertisements in this way means that a digital record of these fragile, delicate publications now exists, a new resource for Marsh’s Library. Mapping the advertisements in this way also has the advantage of contextualising data for users, and opening up plenty of discussion points by revealing patterns in terms of trade locations, and illuminating historical developments in terms of consumerism in Dublin.

Gráinne recently completed an MPhil in Digital Humanities and Culture in Trinity College Dublin (2014), for which she received a First. Her thesis was entitled: Patterns & Print: Visualising Historical Newspaper Publishing. Prior to this, she completed a Masters in Library and Information Studies in UCD (2007), and a BA in German & English in Trinity College Dublin (2005).

Gráinne has almost ten years’ experience working in the area of libraries and information management, with roles ranging from positions in academic libraries (IMI, Griffith College Dublin), to corporate library and knowledge management (Ernst & Young). For more than four years she has worked in Pioneer Investments as a Communications and Information Specialist, where her role entails managing knowledge sharing within company (managing intranets for the Investments, Legal and Sales & Marketing teams using Microsoft SharePoint), and externally (administering company websites using Adobe CQ5). Managing our intranets involves gathering knowledge-sharing requirements from the business and establishing how best to manage them. In other words, finding ways for colleagues to share intellectual capital quickly and easily across the business. Solutions range from out-of-the-box SharePoint sites and enterprise social tools, to custom-developed tools and applications. Training and user awareness play a large role in her day-to-day work. Administering external-facing website involves designing and building pages to promote new marketing campaigns and collateral, and liaising with Sales & Marketing teams to acquire, edit and publish content in a timely manner.
