1. Letter of recommendation from Dr Shaw
Bram Stoker first visited Marsh’s Library on Wednesday, 4 July 1866.
As required by the Library, Stoker presented a letter of recommendation. This testimonial is a hastily-scrawled note on a piece of scrap paper and may have been requested from his college tutor, Dr Shaw, with little or no notice. Stoker would not be the first – or last – student to impose upon a tutor in such fashion.
The note reads:
I recommend Abraham Stoker as a fit & proper person to read in Marsh’s Library.
G F Shaw
July 2. 66
