26. Midrash Tanhuma
A type of biblical interpretation that emerged in ancient Judaism was known as midrash, a method used by the rabbis that draws out and explores the various ways in which biblical texts can be understood. This book represents one collection of midrash, known as Midrash Tanhuma; it is named after Rabbi Tanhuma, who is quoted in the collection. Midrash Tanhuma incorporates narrative (aggadah) and legal (halakah) material in its engagement with the first five books of the Bible, the Torah. The collection draws on generations of rabbinic teaching, and was likely collected in late antiquity. This edition, which has a lovely woodcut title page, was printed in Frankfurt in 1701.
