Donation of Stillingfleet Document

Richard L. Bradshaw has recently donated this 1688 indenture between Edward Stillingfleet and John Tillotson.

We’re thrilled to have been given this indenture as Stillingfleet, who was Bishop of Worcester, had an extensive library of 10000 books which were bought by Marsh after his death and it’s his books that are now in the first gallery of the library. John Tillotson was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1691 until his death in 1694 and at the time of this indenture he was dean of Canterbury.

Richard L Bradshaw has written a book on John Bradshaw called God’s Battleaxe: The Life of Lord President John Bradshawe. Bradshaw was President of the High Court of Justice at the trial of King Charles I and it was he who declared Charles guilty. Details of the book can be found here.
