Marsh’s Library in libel and sex scandal……….Er, in 1864

Eibhear Walshe’s recently published novel ‘The Diary of Mary Travers’ deals with the fall-out from the real-life affair between Oscar Wilde‘s father and Mary Travers, the daughter of our then Assistant Keeper.
The libel case taken by Wilde against Mary filled Dublin newspapers for weeks in 1864 and provides Eibhear Walshe with the premise for a beautifully-written and finely-observed novel.
