Inigo Jones on Stonehenge was our book choice to mark the Summer Solstice

Jones reviewed all the possibilities for the construction of this imposing monument and eventually concluded that it had been built by the Romans, declaring from his reconstruction of the geometry of the ground plan that ‘the Scheam also by which this work Stoneheng formed, was an Architectonicall Scheam used by the Romans.’   This fascinating book also repeats (among many others) the story told by Gerald of Wales, that the stones were part of the ‘Giants’ Dance’ brought from Africa to Ireland, and thence, by the magic of Merlin and at the whim of a British king, transported to their present place.
