The Year of the Dragon

This is the second day of the Chinese Year of the Dragon so we looked at some of the images of China from the gorgeously coloured Blaeu Atlas Maior
, which is one of the gems of Dutch printing from the seventeenth century. These atlases are in Bishop Stillingfleet’s collection, bought by Archbishop Marsh when he founded the library. Stillingfleet’s ‘noble library’ may have belonged to a bishop, but his interests extended from his Creator to the wonders of creation, described in the extensive collection of maps and travel books.
