Walking on the moon

The first naming system for the features of the moon
was published in Giovanni Battista Riccioli’s book, Almagestum Novum (1651), in which he and his collaborator Grimaldi  showed images of the lunar landscape in great detail.  The book can be seen  in our ‘Marvels of Science’ exhibition where it is open at the amazing frontispiece showing a heavenly contest between the Copernican and Tychonic systems.
